Trick or treating was always something I looked forward to as a child and even more so when my own kids were little. I love ALL holidays, so I would be thinking about Halloween as early as Labor Day. I always prided myself in Kaitlyn and Abbey having some pretty cool costumes without having to spend a fortune on them.
When I was a kid, I don’t think I ever owned a store bought costume. My grandma was an awesome seamstress, so she always made our costumes. I remember being a hobo and a gypsie on more than one occasion. But I never complained because if I were dressed as a gypsie, that meant I could wear tons of jewelry from Grandma’s jewelry box. I would have rings on every finger, tons of necklaces; one of which would no doubt end up lost. But being the great Grandma that she was, she never got upset.
My big sister, big brother, me and my baby sister would head out into the neighborhood, most often unattended by a parent, something I never would’ve allowed my own children to do. But it was a different time and you knew everyone in the little town I grew up in. It was not uncommon for us to get real homemade treats like candy apples , cookies and brownies.
I remember, Ms. Pauline Harrison always gave us a little bottle of Coca Cola and a bag of peanuts and Mrs. Sylvia Huffman always made popcorn balls. What I wouldn’t give today, to see both of these sweet ladies from my childhood church and just hug them both tight, and seeing my Grandma…well…that would just be awesome. I miss her so much!
I’m sure you have your own trick or treat memories and I hope you’ll share them with your kids this Halloween. I’d also like to invite you to come trick or treat with me on Halloween night at The Mall At Turtle Creek.
Everyone is invited to this years Mall-O-Ween with FREE candy and trick or treating from 5-7 PM. We’ll be playing all of your favorite spooky songs and the kids can make Halloween crafts with the Clopton Clinic Charitable Foundation.
I hope you and your kids have a safe and Happy Halloween, I can’t wait to ooh and ahhh and all the great costumes!
