NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Don’t get it twisted. If you tune in to watch the Country Music Television Music Awards, don’t start checking the program guide if you Jason Derulo and John Legend on stage.

The awards ceremony has a tradition of providing unlikely parings — and tonight the tradition continues.

Derulo teams up with Luke Bryan and Florida Georgia Line, while Legend will perform Jennifer Nettles and Hunter Hayes on Legend’s own hit, “All of Me.”

Derulo says the mixing and matching of genres is “really cool” — because it’s good to have people cross musical boundaries. He says “Just because you love country music doesn’t mean you can’t love other genres of music.

Mainstream country’s hardest rocker is inviting Lzzy Hale of Halestorm to appear with him on the CMT Music Awards on Wednesday night for a performance of album track “That’s Damn Rock & Roll” — not his current single or recent No. 1 hit.

Church says “it makes sense to do something different” on award shows and the performance with Hale will continue a string of unique approaches on awards shows recently.
