Jonesboro, AR – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – Aug 1, 2024 – This week, Encompass Health hosted Arkansas State University students in an Olympic-themed boot camp on ASU’s campus. The event brought together local certified Parkinson’s therapists who worked closely with ASU students to assist Parkinson’s patients throughout this week-long event.

Throughout the week, participants engaged in timed tasks competing for gold, silver, and bronze medals. The activities were designed to be both challenging and enjoyable.

Participants went through various circuits focusing on fine motor skills, balance, activities of daily living (ADLs), gait, floor recovery, and Parkinson’s-specific exercises. These exercises emphasized posture, weight shifting in multiple directions, trunk rotation, and stepping strategies, all aimed at improving movement quality and reducing fall risk. While the primary focus was on physical improvement, the underlying goal was to ensure everyone had fun together.

 

“I am incredibly proud of every participant,” stated Bethany Moss, a physical therapist at Encompass Health. “For many, just leaving the house is a significant achievement due to anxiety or physical limitations, and for some, it’s both. Their participation and enthusiasm are truly commendable.”

There was also a care partner education session to empower the loved ones living each day alongside those with Parkinson’s, giving resources and education for community support groups and exercise classes to continue with after camp ends. 

The bootcamp also provided ASU students with hands-on experience that prepares them for future interactions with patients.

“Our goal is to create an environment where emotional, mental, and physical health can thrive, fostering a supportive community among those with Parkinson’s,” Moss continued. “It’s truly heartwarming to see everyone cheering each other on. Witnessing their progress and determination is inspiring, and we are honored to support them on their journey to better health and well-being.”
