Arkansas State University Clarifies Decision; ASU Allows Cross-Shaped Decals

(From KAIT) There was a development yesterday in the “cross emblem on the helmet” story at Arkansas State University. Apparently when the team takes the field Saturday for the Utah State game, the cross emblem decals can be on the helmets.   ASU now says any player who wishes to voluntarily place an NCAA compliant sticker on their helmet can do so.  It all started with a cross with the initials of a former player and equipment manager killed this year in separate incidents.  The school changed the cross to a straight line after it received a complaint.  But then a football player said that violated his free speech.  And with the help of the Liberty Institute demanded that ASU restore the cross.  But in a response to that letter, ASU System President Dr. Chuck Welch said the Liberty Institute didn’t have their facts straight.  Welch said Coach Blake Anderson, not the football team, designed the cross after meeting with several players.  Welch says that was done without the counsel of the university which is why the decals were modified to avoid the premise of separation of church and state.  Now, any player can put a sticker on their helmet as long as they do it voluntarily and its within NCAA regulations.

Liberty Institute is a national nonprofit legal group.
