Jonesboro, AR – (Contributed) – Sept. 26, 2025 – Arkansas State University will recognize Disability Awareness Month in October with a series of events hosted by the Department of Access and Accommodation Services.

The month-long observance will feature tabling events and an art exhibit designed to educate the campus community and promote inclusion.

“This month, our hope is to educate people about the complex, unique experience of disability,” said Dr. Dominique White, director of Access and Accommodation Services. “But with an event like the art exhibit, we also want to celebrate the many talents and skills of people with disabilities, especially our students, who contribute so much to the university and larger Jonesboro community.”

The first event, Disability Awareness Month Kickoff, will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 2, in the Reng Student Union, first floor. The tabling event will focus on Down syndrome, including definitions, symptoms, facts and myths, notable figures and the importance of using inclusive language.

Additional events scheduled throughout the month include:

• Thursday, Oct. 9 – Tabling event: Sight Disabilities, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Reng Student Union, first floor
• Monday, Oct. 13 – Disability Awareness Month Art Exhibit, 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., Fine Arts Center Art Gallery, 2412 Quapaw Way
• Tuesday, Oct. 14 – Tabling event: Organization recognition, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Reng Student Union, first floor
• Wednesday, Oct. 15 – Tabling event: All About ADD/ADHD, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Reng Student Union, first floor
• Thursday, Oct. 23 – Tabling event: All About Cerebral Palsy, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Reng Student Union, first floor
• Thursday, Oct. 30 – Tabling event: All About Learning Disabilities, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Reng Student Union, first floor

Each tabling event will provide students, faculty and staff with information about different disabilities by covering symptoms, debunking myths and highlighting notable figures.

The art exhibit on Monday, Oct. 13, which will showcase the creativity of A-State students with disabilities and offer insight into the inspiration behind their work, will be open to the public.

White expressed appreciation to the HOWL Transition Program, Multicultural Center and Department of Art + Design for their collaborative efforts with the observance.
