Jonesboro, AR – (Contributed) – The Sun Belt Conference announced Tuesday that Arkansas State’s freshman catcher/infielder Derek Martinez was named Sun Belt Week 7 Conference Player of the Week.

Martinez started at first base Friday night against James Madison, knocking a two-run shot in the second inning, then launched the game-winning home run in the eighth inning. Martinez’s first at-bat of Saturday’s game against the Dukes ended in a grand slam before adding another RBI in the fifth inning.

In Sunday’s game, Martinez represented the game-winning run after scoring in the fourth inning, and later moved two runners into scoring position on a sac bunt in the fifth.

Martinez totaled five hits on 11 at-bats with three home runs for four runs and nine RBIs in the three games while laying down one sac bunt.

Coastal Carolina’s Darin Horn was named SBC Week 7 Pitcher of the Week.

Martinez will look to continue his hot streak this week with a game at Memphis on Tuesday, March 31, with first pitch scheduled for 6 p.m., and a road series at Troy.
