Craighead County placed under winter storm watch

Craighead County, AR – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – Craighead County has been placed under a winter storm watch effective Friday, according to the National Weather Service.

The watch goes into effect Friday, Jan. 23, at noon, and lasts until Sunday, Jan. 25 at 6 p.m. The NWS predicts that north of the Tennessee/Mississippi state line could see snow and sleet accumulations greater than three inches, and ice accumulations up to a quarter of an inch.

“Expect power outages and tree damage due to the ice,” the NWS said. “Travel could be impossible. The hazardous conditions could impact the Friday evening commute.”

In Jonesboro, the NWS predicted a high of 45°F and partly sunny skies for this Thursday, before temperatures dip down to 26°F. Chances for snow increase heading into Friday night and Saturday with a high temperature of 15°F and a low of 12°F. Chance of snow is 90 percent on Saturday.

Temperatures stay below freezing going into next week, with Monday, Jan. 26, forecasted to be sunny with a high of 23°F.

Warming Shelters:

The City of Jonesboro will be offering daytime warming shelters throughout the city. A full list of the city’s shelter locations and hours is below.

  • Allen Park Community Center (3609 Race St.)
    • Monday through Friday, 3:30 to 9 p.m., and on Saturday from 12 to 5 p.m.
  • Earl Bell Community Center (1212 S. Church St.)
    • Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on Saturday from 12 to 5 p.m.
  • Jonesboro Youth Community Center (1421 W. Nettleton Ave.)
    • Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on Saturday from 12 to 5 p.m.
  • Parker Park Community Center (1506 N. Church St.)
    • Monday through Friday 3:30 to 9 p.m., and on Saturday from 12 to 5 p.m.

In addition, the Salvation Army of Jonesboro will be offering an overnight warming shelter that includes two meals a day. Check in is at 4 p.m., and checkout is at 8 a.m. The Salvation Army is located at 800 Cate Ave.

JET buses and trollies will provide free transportation to and from all warming shelters.
