Energy Companies Suspend Disconnects, Planned Outages for Craighead County Customers Due to Extreme Heat

Craighead County, AR – Jonesboro Right Now – As extreme heat continues to impact Arkansas, many power companies are announcing they will be postponing planned outages until the heat subsides.

Entergy Arkansas disconnects are suspended through Friday, Aug. 21, and will resume beginning Monday, Aug. 24, the company said in a news release. In Craighead County, Entergy Arkansas serves Bono, Lake City, Black Oak, Monette, Bay, Caraway, and Cash.

“Please remember that this does not eliminate the possibility of unexpected outages caused by severe weather, emergencies or other damage,” Entergy said in a news release.

In addition, Craighead Electric Cooperative announced earlier this week that its planned outages for the Brookland area were being postponed due to the extreme heat.

“This work was scheduled several weeks ago, with the goal of completing it while ground conditions were dry and favorable for our crews and equipment. At the time, we did not anticipate the prolonged extreme temperatures we are now experiencing,” an update posted to the cooperative’s social media said.

The cooperative will not schedule any more planned outages during the heat, unless an emergency or system condition deemed it necessary. It added that it will communicate with affected members before work in Brookland resumes.

Entergy Arkansas provided some methods to stay safe and manage energy use during extreme heat:

  • Drink plenty of water and stay hydrated.
  • Take regular breaks in a cool or shaded area.
  • Schedule strenuous outdoor activities during the coolest parts of the day when possible.
  • Pay attention to signs of heat exhaustion, including extreme weakness, fatigue, nausea, headache, and heavy sweating.
  • If someone experiences confusion, loss of consciousness, seizures or hot, dry skin, move them to a cool area and seek immediate medical assistance, as these can be signs of heat stroke.

  • Set your thermostat to the highest temperature that’s comfortable.
  • Change or clean your air-conditioning filter regularly.
  • Use ceiling or portable fans to circulate cool air and turn fans off when rooms are unoccupied.
  • Close blinds, shades and curtains during the hottest parts of the day.
  • Seal gaps around doors, windows and ductwork to keep cool air inside.
  • Use your myAdvisor tools through your myEntergy account to monitor your energy use and identify opportunities to save.
