Jonesboro, AR – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – Cooler weather brings common ailments: sneezing, coughing, congestion, headache, runny nose, sore throat. Limiting germ exposure, staying up to date with available vaccines, and knowing what products you need to help relieve symptoms is essential.

Common culprits

Influenza (flu), rhinovirus (common cold), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and COVID-19 are among the most common viruses during the respiratory season from November to early April. If left untreated or if infections are severe, these viruses can progress into longer-lasting or more severe conditions like bronchitis or pneumonia.

Norovirus (stomach bug), strep throat and sinusitis (sinus infection) are other common “winter” illnesses. Symptoms for most of these infections range from a headache, cough or fever to vomiting, diarrhea or weakness, and can possibly lead to more serious symptoms like dehydration or difficulty breathing that require immediate medical attention.

Do you need an antibiotic?

Viral infections typically run their course with symptom relief provided by over-the-counter (OTC) products, but sometimes an antibiotic is needed for infections caused by bacteria. Group A Streptococcus (strep) is a bacteria that causes sore throat, headache, swollen lymph nodes and sometimes fever.

A positive throat swab from a healthcare professional can determine that your sore throat needs to be treated with antibiotics. Our pharmacists at Super V Drugs can test and treat you and your family for Strep without leaving your car!

Self-care with OTCs

There are many products available on store shelves to help treat your symptoms. Cold medicine often contains multiple ingredients that are marketed to treat multiple symptoms. To prevent medication overlap or major interactions with your prescription medications or medical conditions, always consult your pharmacist before selecting products.

Our pharmacists at Super V Drugs are always available to recommend products and answer any questions you may have.

Prevention is key

Disinfecting common areas, washing/sanitizing hands regularly, and staying home when you are sick help lower the chances of spreading infections. Our pharmacists at Super V Drugs strongly recommend also getting any vaccines available that you qualify for to give you added protection against these common illnesses.

Flu, RSV, pneumonia, and COVID-19 vaccines are available without an appointment at our pharmacy.
