Jonesboro, AR – (Contributed) – Arkansas State University graduate students in the Expressive Arts in Counseling course will host a free Community Mental Health Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 6, at A-State Museum.

The event is open to the public and aims to offer a fun, supportive “mental health day” for individuals of all ages.

The event is part of a capstone project designed to help students apply expressive arts techniques to real-world community wellness initiatives.

Guests will have access to a wide range of activities, including choreographed group dancing, line dancing, cookie decorating, book readings, essential oils, art activities, games, and axe-throwing.

“We wanted to create something welcoming, uplifting, and accessible for anyone in the community who could use a break or a boost,” said Dr. Savannah Cormier, associate professor of counseling, director of the Play Therapy Education and Research Center, and co-director of the Lupine Wellness Center. “The day is meant to remind people that taking care of their mental health can also be fun, creative, and community-driven.”

The event will also feature community partners sharing information about local mental health resources, including Bloom Therapy, Beyond Barriers Telehealth Practice, Feathered Mindfulness, and other organizations.

“The graduate students are all trained in counseling and play therapy, and this assignment is part of their clinical work to facilitate therapeutic play for all ages,” Cormier added. “They are the ones facilitating all of the activities.”

Updates about Community Mental Health Day can be found on the A-State Clinical Mental Health Counseling Program Facebook group and on Instagram at @Astatecmhc.

The Museum is adjacent to the Dean B. Ellis Library. For more information, contact Cormier.
