Jonesboro, AR – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – Aug. 13, 2025 – Fraternity members helped Jonesboro students prepare for the new school year by offering free haircuts.

The Nu Tau Sigma chapter of Phi Beta Sigma hosted its third annual Back2School Free Haircut event at the NEA School of Barbering on Aug. 12.

During the event, 100 young men got a free haircut. There was also free food and music provided by D.J. Satin Soundz.

Member L.C. Kennedy said since the event started, the fraternity has hired more barbers and even holds it at multiple locations due to increased demand. He said the fraternity doesn’t want to leave any children behind, with the goal being to serve as many students as possible within its 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. timeframe.

“[The] barber school had more than seven, sometimes up to maybe 10 barbers, cutting at one time, so the more students came, the more we were able to serve. That’s a blessing,” Kennedy said.

The collaboration between Nu Tu Sigma and the NEA School of Barbering was very important, Kennedy said. The business wanted to do what it could to help out, he said, from providing the space for the D.J. and a barbecue grill for the food.

“They [the students] went for a haircut and left with a haircut, food, music, and shaking hands, meeting other brothers in the fraternity, and just letting them know that they’ll be seeing our faces more,” he said.

The most important thing about this event, Kennedy said, was to ensure the students looked and did their best as the new school year started.

Based on the success of this year’s event, Kennedy said, there will be another one next year at the same time and place, adding that he would like to maintain the collaboration with NEA School of Barbering. He also said the fraternity is looking into further expanding the event, potentially getting more barbers and/or barber shops involved.

“We remain steadfast in our dedication to making a positive impact in the lives of young men and will continue to serve our community through meaningful initiatives such as this,” Kennedy said.

For the past 14 weeks and counting, the top Billboard spot has been held by a love ballad: Alex Warren's "Ordinary." As Berklee College of Music professor and forensic musicologist Joe Bennett notes, the February release is "a fair bit slower than the mean average for the Hot 100, or for a historical song of the summer."
