Jonesboro, AR – Jonesboro Right Now – A Jonesboro man faces felony charges of child endangerment and tampering with evidence after police said he provided transportation for three suspects in the Walker Place shooting that left one person dead.

District Judge Tommy Fowler found probable cause July 15 to charge 29-year-old Lewis Calvin Harris with the following offenses:

• Two counts of first-degree endangering the welfare of a minor (Class D felony)
• Tampering with physical evidence (Class D felony)
• Two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor (Class A misdemeanor)

According to the probable cause affidavit, on July 12, Jonesboro police officers responded to a shooting at a Walker Place apartment where a person was shot multiple times. He was taken to a nearby hospital soon after, where he was later pronounced dead.

Witnesses told officers that three suspects came to the apartment to buy marijuana from the victim. They advised that upon being shown the marijuana, the suspects pulled out handguns and an AR-style rifle to rob the victim. A struggle over the suspects’ firearms occurred, and shots were fired, hitting the victim multiple times, before the suspects fled the area.

Video collected from the area showed a pickup truck with an Arkansas license plate dropping off three suspects near the entrance of the apartment at 10:55 p.m. and later picking them up at 11:11 p.m. following the shooting, with the vehicle leaving at a high rate of speed. The vehicle was tracked to an address on French Street.

A BOLO was sent out for the vehicle used in the incident. It was found occupied with three adults who were interviewed. It was learned that Harris had let them borrow the truck on the morning of July 13. One of the truck’s occupants thought it was strange that when she called him to return the truck, he told her to keep it.

Harris was found and interviewed. He told police that his step-son and two of his step-son’s friends asked if he would take them to the Walker Place apartment to buy marijuana. Harris agreed and dropped them off near the entrance of the apartment complex. He said that he noticed police in the area and moved the truck, then he heard gunfire, and shortly after, the three juveniles came running to the truck.

Harris was arrested and booked into the Craighead County Detention Center at 6:04 p.m. on a $25,000 cash/surety bond. His next court appearance is scheduled for Sept. 30.

JPD Public Information Official Sally Smith told JRN that two of the juveniles involved in the incident were arrested and will be tried as adults.
