Jonesboro, AR – Contributed – Karley Bloesch, a second-year medical student at New York Institute of Technology College of Osteopathic Medicine at Arkansas State University (NYITCOM at A-State), was recently awarded a newly-established scholarship from the Jonesboro University Heights Lions Club.

Bloesch, a native of Poplar Grove, AR, was honored at the JUH Lions Club’s Feb. 17 meeting. The $1,000 scholarship was founded to support medical students who are from Arkansas and are committed to practice in state.

“Lions Club International exists to support people and organizations who are making in a difference in our communities, and NYITCOM’s mission certainly aligns with ours,” said Jonesboro University Heights Lions Club First Vice President Deborah Levins. “We’re proud of the work our local medical school is doing to impact healthcare and health education in our state and region, and we are honored to support students who are committed to serve in medicine.”

JUH Lions Clubs is the first civic organization to establish a scholarship for NYITCOM at A-State students.

“The University Heights Lions Club has been an enthusiastic supporter of our medical school for a number of years, and we are incredibly grateful for this new scholarship,” said Shane Speights, D.O., dean of NYITCOM at A-State. “The Lions do tremendous work in our city and our region, and we thank them for their interest in financially supporting our students with local ties as they pursue their dreams of becoming physicians.”

Lions Clubs International is the world’s largest service club organization, comprising over 1.4 million members in more than 49,000 clubs across 200+ countries. The organization focuses on community volunteering, with key initiatives in vision care (Lions In Sight), diabetes awareness, hunger relief, environment, and childhood cancer.

The JUH Lions Club meets on the first and third Tuesday of every month at 6:30 a.m. at the Eggsellent Cafe.
