Jonesboro, AR – Jonesboro Right Now – Work is beginning on upgrading the City of Jonesboro’s tornado siren system.

In a Facebook post from the city on July 9, sirens in the area south of Nettleton Avenue are being reprogrammed to operate under the new system. The post noted that while sirens could be back in operation as early as July 10, work could continue through the weekend.

The post continued that once that part of the upgrades was complete, crews would then move to the area north of Nettleton Avenue.

“This scheduled maintenance, taking place during the historically lower-risk summer months, is necessary to ensure the city’s outdoor warning siren system continues to operate reliably,” the post said.

In addition to maintenance, the project is part of a city initiative to expand tornado siren coverage and improve the radio systems used to activate the sirens. New sirens will be added, and some will be relocated as part of the project.

The post added that if severe weather were to move in over the weekend, citizens should monitor local news outlets for information.
