Blytheville, AR – (Contributed) – Mississippi County Hospital System (MCHS) and St. Bernards Healthcare announced a finalized agreement Wednesday for St. Bernards to manage Great River Medical Center in Blytheville and South Mississippi County (SMC) Regional Medical Center in Osceola.
MCHS’s Board of Directors approved the partnership to begin operations under St. Bernards management in January 2026. John Logan, MCHS Board President, expressed excitement about St. Bernards’ strategic efforts to improve rural healthcare delivery and access.
“Our healthcare providers have served Mississippi County since 1953 with a mission to restore, maintain and improve the health of everyone in the communities we serve,” said Logan. “Working together, we now have an opportunity to enhance locally based healthcare. This agreement with St. Bernards sets up our system for future success. Our ultimate goal is to expand healthcare services in Mississippi County without the burden of traveling to larger cities.”
Through the relationship, patients at MCHS will have direct access to St. Bernards Healthcare’s network of specialists and subspecialists. St. Bernards has prioritized improving access to local care within Northeast Arkansas. Similar efforts include a focus on the following:
- workforce and clinical service expansion,
- access, coordination and community health,
- digital transformation and technology integration, and
- facilities and infrastructure investments.
Within this approach, highlights include new service lines, electronic health record upgrades, maternal and infant health efforts, hospital smart rooms that use virtual monitoring, Artificial Intelligence and facility enhancements, among others.
St. Bernards Healthcare President and CEO Chris Barber said that St. Bernards has a 40-plus year history of successful partnerships with regional hospitals in various capacities and anticipates the advancement of care offered in Mississippi County.
“We offer meaningful healthcare services throughout the region—all with the goal to provide the most appropriate care for residents’ needs close to home,” Barber said. “Combined, St. Bernards and Mississippi County Hospital System have nearly 200 years of service to northeast Arkansas and southeast Missouri. Today’s announcement positions both of us to serve our communities even better in the years ahead.”
Mississippi County Hospital System’s largest facility, Great River Medical Center in Blytheville, provides the county with a full-service hospital. It holds Joint Commission accreditation, offering emergency care, imaging, inpatient and outpatient care, surgical services and comprehensive women’s services. In fact, the Arkansas Perinatal Quality Collaborative (APQC) honored Great River’s women’s services team this year for safely reducing the number of C-section births from 2023 to 2025.
SMC Regional Medical Center in Osceola, meanwhile, provides the county with a Rural Emergency Hospital, complete with emergency care, imaging services and outpatient care.
Both hospitals serve Mississippi County with Level IV trauma certifications. In addition, they received “Bronze” status in 2025 from the American Stroke Association for rural stroke treatment. SMC Regional Medical Center, in particular, earned “Diamond Status” from the Arkansas Department of Health—the agency’s highest recognition—for its “Door to CT Time” to image for stroke.
In total, the hospital system employs more than 250 team members, making it a top-10 employer in Mississippi County. Its partnership with St. Bernards Healthcare strengthens ties with the Jonesboro-based healthcare system, which employs more than 5,000 people and provides healthcare services to 23 counties in northeast Arkansas and southeast Missouri.
