Monette, AR – JonesboroRightNow.com – For decades, the only traffic light in Monette stood in the middle of town at the intersection of Highway 18, also known as Drew Avenue, and Highway 139, also known as Edmonds.

Now, Monette is preparing to add a second traffic light.

During a special meeting last Monday (May 18), the Monette City Council approved plans to move forward with installation of a traffic signal and additional turn lanes at the intersection of Highway 18 and Highway 139 along the city’s north bypass.

The intersection was created when the Arkansas Department of Transportation opened the Highway 18 bypass around Monette on Nov. 20, 2017. At the time, ARDOT described the project as a “major infrastructure improvement designed to move traffic more safely and efficiently around the city.”

While the bypass reduced congestion in downtown Monette, concerns about the new Highway 18 and 139 crossing surfaced almost immediately.

Concerns intensified after multiple serious crashes were reported along the bypass corridor in recent years, including a March 1, 2022, crash near the Highway 139 intersection that killed five people. Other injury crashes have also been reported near the crossing since the bypass opened. Local residents have repeatedly described the intersection as dangerous because of the high speeds and difficulty crossing Highway 18 traffic.

KAIT-TV reports dating back to at least 2022 documented discussions between ARDOT and local officials regarding a possible signal installation. Previous ARDOT traffic studies cited in news coverage indicated approximately 10,000 vehicles per day travel Highway 18 through the intersection, while between 2,000 and 2,800 vehicles daily use Highway 139.

Reports at the time also noted the bypass speed limit was 60 miles per hour, with traffic studies showing many drivers exceeding that speed.

According to reporting by the NEA Town Courier, Monday night’s council meeting included presentations from ARDOT representatives Shane Wood and Jocie Baker, along with Craighead County Judge Marvin Day.

The Courier reported the proposed project includes a new traffic signal, twin turn lanes, drainage improvements and utility work designed to improve traffic flow and safety at the intersection.

The newspaper also reported ARDOT plans to provide approximately $1.225 million toward the project’s estimated $1.9 million total cost. Craighead County has reportedly committed $500,000 toward the project, while the City of Monette would be responsible for the remaining local share through a financing arrangement with the county.

According to the Courier report, temporary flashing caution lights are expected to be installed before the permanent traffic signal is completed.

The newspaper further reported construction could begin as early as June, with a projected completion date in late summer 2027.

For many Monette residents, the project represents the culmination of years of concerns and requests for safety improvements at the busy intersection.

Once completed, the Highway 18 and 139 signal will become only the second traffic light in Monette.
