Jonesboro, AR – (JonesboroRightNow.com) – The National Weather Service is warning drivers of black ice across Northeast Arkansas.

The NWS said while wintry precipitation has ended, patches of black ice had been seen on Arkansas Department of Transportation cameras in Northeast Arkansas. In a special weather statement issued early Tuesday morning, it said rapidly falling temperatures will cause any water remaining on roadways to flash freeze, resulting in patchy black ice.

The NWS said temperatures may not rise above freezing until either the late morning or early afternoon, and that there wouldn’t be much sunshine due to increasing cloud cover.  It added that travel conditions could be hazardous, especially on any untreated roads, bridges and overpasses.

“Motorists are urged to use extra caution if traveling this morning. Slow down and increase following distance between vehicles,” the NWS said. “Be especially alert when approaching bridges and overpasses, as these structures freeze before paved roadways.”

Ice patches have been reported on multiple Northeast Arkansas highways, according to ARDOT. Before heading out, check road conditions by calling 511 or visiting IDriveArkansas.com
