Update Oct. 6:

Jonesboro Police Department public information official Sally Smith said the case was assigned to a detective Monday morning. She added that police are expected to have more information Monday afternoon.

She also provided the incident report to JRN. The report lists three victims, one of whom had a brain bleed.

The report described the second victim as having multiple cuts to the arm, bruising to the ribs, as well as the victim’s face being swollen and bleeding from cuts. The report noted this victim had a possible internal injury from a broken wrist and ribs. No injuries were listed on the third victim.

According to the police report, police responded to the Cate Avenue/S. Church Street intersection around 1:54 a.m. on Oct. 4. Police saw two people “laying unresponsive” on the ground. The report said police heard yelling from the parking lot and saw “several subjects fighting in the parking lot.” One of the responding officers, Brandon Meeker, grabbed onto one subject in an attempt to place him in custody.

“He turned and faced me and grabbed onto me. I struggled with him for several seconds before Ptl. D. Echols came up behind the subject and moved him to the ground. Ptl. D. Echols and I was able to place the subject into handcuffs,” Meeker wrote in the report.

The report describes other responding officers handcuffing other subjects.

Editor’s Note: The original video showing the altercation appears to have been removed from social media.

The latter part of the video records after Jonesboro Police officers arrived on the scene. The video shows a chaotic scene with officers attempting to gain control. Some of those shown in the video were detained and arrested by officers.

Jonesboro Police Chief Rick Elliott told JonesboroRightNow that a total of five people were arrested. Elliott also said two people were transported to local hospitals with head injuries. He said he was not aware of their condition. Elliott said no officers were injured.

Elliott could not provide any information about what may have led to the fight.

The online inmate roster for the Craighead County Detention Center included two black males from Steele, MO, charged with disorderly conduct and a black male from Jonesboro charged with 2nd degree assault, all booked into the jail shortly after midnight Saturday morning.

The roster also showed a black female from Marion, AR, charged with disorderly conduct and a white male from Crawfordsville, AR, also charged with disorderly conduct. The two inmates were arrested shortly after midnight Saturday morning. Both had been released later on Saturday.

JonesboroRightNow cannot confirm that the charges against some or all of the inmates referenced above were connected to the alleged street fight at Church and Cate.

As is typically the case with incidents such as this, Elliott is asking the public for help. “We encourage anyone who can provide pertinent information or videos of this incident to please contact the Criminal Investigation Division at (870) 935-6710 on Monday,” Elliott said.
