Harrisburg, AR – Jonesboro Right Now – State officials are urging the public to stay out of the water at Lake Poinsett after confirming the presence of a harmful algal bloom.

The Arkansas Division of Environmental Quality (DEQ) issued an official advisory for the Poinsett County lake Thursday, warning that the cyanobacteria fueling the bloom can produce toxic substances posing significant health risks to both humans and animals.

A news release states that exposure to the contaminated water can lead to a range of severe symptoms, including headaches, weakness, shortness of breath, muscle spasms, and gastrointestinal illnesses.

The DEQ urges visitors to exercise special caution regarding children, pets, and livestock, who are particularly vulnerable to the toxins. Pet owners are advised to immediately wash their animals with clean tap water if they come into contact with the lake, taking strict care to prevent them from licking their coats and ingesting the bacteria.

State crews are currently monitoring the lake’s water quality and say they will not lift the advisory until the bloom has fully dissipated.

Residents who suspect they have spotted a harmful algal bloom should avoid contact with the water and report the sighting immediately by calling 501-682-0744 or emailing ee.habs@arkansas.gov. Further safety information can be found on the DEQ’s website.

This is a developing story. JRN will provide updates as they are available.
